Harriet is new on the ward, awkward and unsure of herself. The chief of surgery takes an interest, locks the on-call room and offers some extremely practical instruction. Out in the corridor, the head nurse who wants Harriet gone is listening.

A hospital hierarchy, turned upside down

If Under the Boss moved Harriet into an office, Under the Chief puts her in scrubs. The structure is familiar on purpose: a newcomer at the bottom of the ladder, a powerful man at the top who notices her, and a woman in between who sees her as a threat to her own position.

The on-call room is the series' private space, a locked door in a building where everyone is always on the move. The head nurse is the antagonist, and she is not a passive one: she wants Harriet fired and is waiting for proof.

It is a hospital drama in the loosest sense. Nobody operates on anyone; the medical setting supplies uniforms, night shifts and an authority structure that the series uses as foreplay. The tone stays playful, and Harriet's surprise at her own luck is part of the charm.
