In this kingdom, any man who lays a hand on the queen is executed. The queen, 22, assigns the humblest guard in her service to the door of her bedchamber, then spends every night tempting him to break the law.

The guard has no rank and no family name. The post outside the royal bedchamber should be an honour; it is a trap. The queen is young, bored and aware that the law protects her completely, and she uses that to tease the one man who cannot respond without risking his head.

Every night is a test. She dares him, he resists, and the tension between duty and desire builds toward the moment he stops resisting. The queen is not cruel so much as starved of anything real; the guard is the only person in the castle who speaks to her as a person, which gives the dares an undertone of loneliness the series handles with care.
